As we have all seen, there is a ton of contradictory information on the internet regarding healthy eating. Are eggs bad; are they good? Should you go paleo? Is gluten harmless or the enemy? Without someone to clear up questions and misinformation, support groups can leave people feeling more confused than they were before. It’s this confusion that led me to develop World Health Sherwood Park’s structured nutrition support group.
Losing weight is hard. Losing weight on your own is harder. When you take on a new challenge by yourself, it’s harder to find motivation and easier to revert to old ways when times get tough. We need a community where all members can find support, stress relief, and learn new strategies.
Support groups have been proven to help people lose weight as they provide you with the social support you might not be receiving from friends and family. Many people may be the only member of their household trying to lose weight and feel alone in their struggle. A support group provides you with a bunch of people who all have the same goal as you. They are also facing many of the same challenges as you. Although it may feel like you are the only person in the world with a certain issue, someone out there is also having that same problem. Knowing that you aren’t alone is sometimes all the motivation you need to keep on going.
“We need a community where all members can find support, stress relief, and learn new strategies.”
People will be able to share their struggles and complaints in a safe environment because the group will be structured. It gives you a chance to get some frustration off your chest. Then we will all work together to discuss how that problem can be fixed. It can be hard to problem solve alone sometimes but the support group provides you with a group of people to help solve issues you may have.
