“I just woke up one day and realized I didn’t want to look like this anymore,” says World Health Edmonton member Chris McCarthy. “I had grown uncomfortable with my size and realized that it was time to take my life back under control.”
Chris began his weight loss journey in June of last year at World Health Kensington.
“I did sessions with Nicole Niska and she helped me big time,” says Chris, who has been working out solo for the last few months. “I’m considering getting back into the personal training!”
As with any major life change, Chris’s mission to lose weight has not been without obstacles.
“The most challenging part of my weight loss journey boils down to two things,” says Chris. “One- trying to keep myself from binge eating, and two- struggling with feeling like I did not work out enough or accomplish what I should have with my workouts.”
When he began, Chris’s ultimate goal was to get down to 235 pounds so he could go sky diving this July for his birthday.
“I’ve since read that it’s actually 225 pounds, so I still have some work to do,” adds Chris. Though he isn’t quite at his ultimate goal, Chris’s positive mindset allows him to celebrate the success he has seen so far.
“My biggest accomplishment is just generally feeling better,” he explains. “I have more energy and I feel confident going about my day.”
A typical day in the gym for Chris consists of doing 30 minutes of cardio followed by another 30 to 60 minutes of weight training. He also works hard to make healthy eating a priority.
“I know nutrition is really important,” says Chris. “I have my good days and I have bad days. As long as the good days outweigh the bad in the week then I know I am doing okay.”
Chris leaves us with a few words of advice to anyone who is just starting out.
“You will have ups and downs along the path but the trick is to stick with it,” he says. “Consistency is key.”
