On any given Saturday in the summer it’s safe to assume you’ll see one, two or 20 World Health staff members wandering the aisles of the farmer’s market. While we typically set out to stock up on fresh local-grown produce for the week, every so often our eyes wander towards tasty, tempting, totally-bad-for-you treats. When we were offered what we thought was a cookie dough sample, we were just turning to run when the ladies said,

“It’s made from chickpeas!”

One taste and we were hooked, so we caught up with Staci and Karmel, the ladies behind Chickie Dough to find out the inspiration behind the cookie dough flavoured snack, why health is important them and how they stay active in Edmonton.

Q: So, what IS Chickie Dough?
A: It’s a chickpea based dip that gives you a “comfort food feeling” you can still feel good about! It comes in a range of enticing flavors including Peanut Butter, Trail Mix, and Chocolate Chip. All dips are high fibre, high protein and low sugar. Our product is a smart alternative to other sweet dips laden with butter, cream cheese and sugar.

Q: Yum. What are the nutritional benefits of Chickie Dough?
A: Each container of Chickie Dough contains ½ cup of chickpeas! Chickpeas are rich in protein (7 grams per half cup!), fibre, iron, folate, and potassium, are low in fat and cholesterol, and are a great option when looking for meat alternatives. Our Chocolate Chip Chickie Dough has approximately 1/3 of the calories found in peanut butter or chocolate hazelnut spread and is a great way to curb a craving for something sweet and indulgent without sacrificing nutrition. We pair it with sliced fruit for a balanced snack!

Q: What was the inspiration behind creating Chickie Dough?
A: There are so many things that inspired the creation of Chickie Dough! Karmel’s diagnosis with Celiac Disease and her pursuit for gluten free options, the passion that we both have for not only healthy eating but delicious options that make choosing nutritious foods easy and our love for experimenting in the kitchen!

Q: What is your background?
A: We are both Registered Dietitians and currently work for Alberta Health Services.

Q :Why is Edmonton a great place to sell Chickie Dough?
A: The Old Strathcona Farmer’s Market and City Market Downtown both draw people that are interested in trying new foods and passionate about feeding their body healthy and delicious options.

Q: What does health and fitness mean to you both?
A: Health and fitness are a big part our lives, not just at work but also at home! We believe in enjoying all types of food in moderation and taking the time to get outside and be active with friends and family.

Q: What is your favourite ways to stay active in Edmonton?
A: Being active goes hand in hand with eating well and we both love Edmonton for its trail system and beautiful views. I love running along the river valley and taking my dog Tux for walks, and Karmel enjoys running, cycling to work and going to the gym.
